So, summer is coming to a close; the ice creams have been eaten, and it’s time to say goodbye to our Summer NCSers.
Across the country thousands of young people have been doing more than just dreading the back to school bell, they’ve taken part in the NCS programme (National Citizen Service). Spread over four weeks they’ve experienced the thrills of rock climbing, abseiling and canoeing as well as the trials and tribulations of managing their own community projects.
As a local delivery provider UFA have had the privilege of working with these young people and watching them grow not only as people, but as citizens ready to step us as the next generation of leaders.
This blog is all about celebrating their hard work – and boy have these guys worked hard!
The Magic Garden Project
The Magic Garden Project is from one of our Suffolk NCS teams. This group of 13 NCSers wanted to set up a tranquil place where parents and families affected by miscarriages could reflect. The team created a Facebook page and organised fundraisers such as a bake sales and quiz night, as well as building the garden itself.
Helping the Homeless
One of our teams in Accrington chose Emmaus as their charity, and like The Magic Garden, they’ve created a social media account, this time twitter @8soi_NCS, and have been tirelessly fundraising on the charity’s behalf – they’ve already organised a successful car wash and are hoping to host a kickboxing competition this month (September).
One Boy and his Dog
Another team are raising funds and awareness for a cause that’s close to one of our Durham team member’s, Danielle Balls, heart, her younger brother has autism and for better quality of life needs a custom-trained service dog from provider Service Dogs Europe. The team are hoping to raise the £2000 difference by arranging raffles, face-painting, a cake sale and sponsored leg-waxing.
The above are just a tiny insights into the hundreds of UFA NCS projects that are happening across the country and will hopefully continue as the teams become NCS graduates.
But it doesn’t end there, a new batch of fresh faced NCSers are about to begin their journey and planning is in full swing for our Autumn half term programme. We’re excited to be working with the same organisations and people previously;
- Northampton – EBP
- Bedford and Suffolk – Reed in Partnership
- Milton Keynes – The Challenge
- Accrington and Lancaster – Inspira
- County Durham – Be Inspired and NYA
NCS is a programme that UFA embraces as its values match our own very closely, we know the programme can massively improve young people’s confidence and their skill set – and we’re not alone, with backing from a multitude of celebrities including Bear Grylls and Tinie Tempah.
If you’d like to be involved get in touch, we’re always happy to have a chat.
It all starts with yes.
