Last month UFA saw young peoples leadership hold the spotlight in Northern Ireland at an event hosted by Chris Little AEP, Simon Hopkinson AEP and Collum Eastwood AEP, in the long room at Stormont. Young people taking part in the UFA Lead Learner programme, Headteachers and other school staff shared stories about how the project had impacted on them individually and as a community. Some of the stories were personal and moving. More importantly the great benefits that were shared also paved the way for future projects of this nature, where young people truly lead the way! more

UFA Lead Learners will receive leadership awards from Dr Stephen Farry, Northern Ireland’s Minister for Employment and Learning for the outstanding contributions they have made as Young Leaders. These young people have led clubs for younger children at their schools, Alternative Education Provision (AEP) and in their communities and have become positive influential role models for younger children. Over 3 years UFA, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, worked with young people from secondary school/AEPs in Northern Ireland to develop a ‘Lead Learner’ programme. All of the young people involved were considered to be at risk of becoming excluded or were already in alternative education provision. more

30 Ambassador Students from years 8&9 (with 2 also from year 12) attended the UFA 2 day Students of Today Leaders of Tomorrow programme. The students will develop valuable skills in preparation for delivering their own UFA Super Learning Day to other students later in the year. more

A recent event, commissioned by the Arts Council and hosted by Sage Gateshead saw nine ‘Peer Facilitators’ trained by UFA (the University of the First Age) lead a day for 45 young people from all over the country. A challenge was set for them to explore their own experiences of the arts, consider the theme of quality and work as a team to create five recommendations for arts organisations about how to recognise and measure quality in their work for children and young people. more
